Dancong: Zhi Lan Xiang (Orchid)

Zhi Lan Xiang ('orchid fragrance') is one of the more refined named aroma types of Phoenix Dancong, valued for a clean, elegant orchid fragrance and a balanced, approachable sweetness. It is a strip-style, charcoal-roasted Guangdong oolong, part of the dancong system that sorts teas by the flower or fruit they evoke. As with all dancong, the variables that matter are single-cultivar purity, growing elevation and a roast judged to support rather than bury the floral aroma.
Long, dark, twisted dancong leaf. The signature is a clean, refined orchid aroma off the wet leaf, more delicate and balanced than the bolder dancong types, over the usual roasted dark-fruit base. Single named-cultivar leaf from higher elevation gives the orchid depth and a long, sweet aftertaste (hui gan), while cheaper blends are thinner and shorter-lived. The roast should be well integrated and restrained enough to preserve the florality, and freshly roasted leaf benefits from a short rest. Wudong-grown material is the benchmark, as throughout dancong.
Phoenix (Fenghuang) mountain in Chaozhou, Guangdong, from roughly 300 m to over 1,500 m, with high Wudong gardens at the top. Zhi Lan Xiang is one of the orchid-leaning aroma types within the dancong system and is generally regarded as one of the more elegant, well-balanced lineages. Standard dancong processing: relatively high oxidation for an oolong, strip-rolled and charcoal-roasted, with roast and resting shaping the cup.
Gongfu: gaiwan or clay, 6-8 g per 100 ml, 95-100°C, a brief rinse, then short 15-25 second steeps ascending; 8-10 infusions from good leaf. Short steeps keep the orchid aroma clean, since dancong releases fast and oversteeping turns bitter. Western: 3-4 g per 200 ml, 95°C, about 2 minutes.
Mass-market Zhi Lan Xiang runs €15-30 (about $16-32) per 100 g, with named single-cultivar Wudong material from €40-90 (about $43-97) per 100 g and old-bush lots higher.

Dancong: Yu Lan Xiang (Magnolia)
The neighboring magnolia-type dancong; both are floral, but Zhi Lan Xiang reaches for orchid where Yu Lan Xiang reaches for magnolia.
Dancong: Mi Lan Xiang (Honey Orchid)
The most exported dancong; mi lan xiang is honey-orchid and rounder, Zhi Lan Xiang a cleaner, more delicate orchid.
Dancong: Ya Shi Xiang (Duck Shit)
The most-hyped dancong type; ya shi xiang is mineral-floral and intense, Zhi Lan Xiang more elegant and approachable.
Among the dancong aroma types, Zhi Lan Xiang is often recommended as one of the most approachable orchid expressions, balanced and clean rather than challenging. The 'zhi lan' of its name refers to a classical orchid fragrance long celebrated in Chinese poetry as a symbol of refinement.
