Dancong: Gui Hua Xiang (Osmanthus)

Gui Hua Xiang (osmanthus fragrance) is a Phoenix dancong aroma type named for the sweet, apricot-and-osmanthus florality it aims to evoke. As with every dancong, the fragrance is the cultivar's own and not added flower, and the variable that decides quality is altitude and tree age, with high Wudong old-tree leaf at the top and lowland plantation material well below it.
Long, dark, twisted strip-style dancong leaf with a clean charcoal roast. The aroma should clearly evoke sweet osmanthus and ripe stone fruit, present in both the dry leaf and the cup, with no synthetic sharpness. Persistence across infusions is the quality test: old-tree Wudong material holds its fragrance for many steeps, while plantation leaf shows the aroma briefly and fades. Look for a clean, integrated roast rather than a burnt edge, and rest freshly roasted leaf a month or two before judging it.
Gui hua xiang is one of the recognized fragrance types within the Phoenix dancong system from the Fenghuang (Phoenix) mountains of Chaozhou, Guangdong. As across all dancong, the high Wudong zone above roughly 1,000 m is the prestige source, and tree age is the primary quality differentiator within any given fragrance type. Charcoal roast level, set by the producer, is a further variable that shifts the balance between fresh florality and deeper caramelized sweetness.
Gongfu: 6-8 g per 100 ml in a gaiwan or Chaozhou clay pot, 95-100°C, a quick 5 second rinse, then 15-25 seconds for the first steep, ascending; 8-12 infusions from good leaf. Short steeps prevent the bitterness dancong falls into when pushed. Western: 3 g per 200 ml, 95°C, around 90 seconds to 2 minutes.
Commercial gui hua xiang from lower-elevation Phoenix gardens runs €15-35 (about $16-38) per 100 g. Named Wudong single-cultivar material starts around €45-90 (about $49-97) per 100 g, with old-tree lots higher.

Dancong: Mi Lan Xiang (Honey Orchid)
The most widely exported dancong xiang type and a gentle baseline; honey-orchid where gui hua xiang reaches for sweet osmanthus and apricot.
Osmanthus Oolong (Scented)
A scented oolong actually perfumed with real osmanthus blossoms, the perfect contrast: added flower scent versus the dancong's own cultivar fragrance.
A persistent point of confusion: gui hua xiang dancong gets its osmanthus note entirely from the leaf's own aromatics, whereas the separate category of scented osmanthus oolong is made by layering real osmanthus blossoms with finished tea, so two very different teas end up evoking the same flower by completely different means.
