Jingmai
Jingmai Shan sits in Lancang county in Pu'er prefecture and it is the one famous puerh origin with a boundary drawn on a map that anybody can go and check. The old tea forests and the Blang and Dai villages that work them were inscribed by UNESCO in 2023, the first World Heritage listing anywhere for a tea landscape. What is protected is a cultivation system rather than a tea: tea grown inside standing forest, under other trees, on ground that was never cleared for it.
What grows here
Sheng puerh above all, sold under the mountain name and increasingly under village names, of which Mangjing, the main Blang settlement, and Jingmai Dazhai, the main Dai one, carry the most weight. The mountain also sells pangxiejiao, crab's leg, a parasitic plant that grows on old tea trunks and is brewed alone or alongside the tea. It is a Jingmai speciality, and sellers treat its presence as a sign that a garden really is old forest rather than a recent planting, which is suggestive rather than proof.
The ground
The tea grows in a multi-layer canopy: tall forest above, tea beneath it and undergrowth below, with moss and epiphytes on the old trunks. Villages maintain belts of ordinary forest between garden clusters, described locally as pest control by separation, and that is one reason the system is treated as a designed landscape rather than a survival. Growers credit the shade and the litter layer for the aroma the mountain is known for. The aroma is real. The mechanism is an attribution.
What to look for
This is the rare case where a real boundary exists and nobody cites it. The inscription has a mapped property and a buffer zone; the administrative area sold as Jingmai is much larger and includes plenty of terrace planting outside the old forest. Ask which one you are being sold. The listing pushed prices and volumes up together, which is the usual pattern, so the name is now worth faking. The tasting check is that Jingmai is the aromatic one, not the powerful one: high orchid fragrance, light body and bitterness that clears fast. Something thick and punishing came off the Menghai side.
How it got here
Jingmai's forest gardens survived because Lancang was remote and away from the state factory system's centre of gravity, so the mountain was never cleared and replanted the way the accessible ones were. Blang tradition traces the planting to an ancestor figure and treats the tea forest as inherited property with rules attached, including limits on cutting the canopy. The 2023 inscription formalised what those rules were already doing. It also changed the incentive: an origin whose value is tied to keeping forest standing is in a very different position from one whose value is tied to yield.
