The Story

MyTeaPal grew out of a Duke University tea club founded in 2016 by Vincent Liu, a computer scientist and certified tea specialist now based in Chengdu, China. The app launched in 2020 and quickly became the default recommendation in tea communities. It earned a 4.8/5 rating on the App Store and praise for its thoughtful, no-ads design.

The app is free, which is unusual for a product this polished. The business model is the MyTeaPal Club: a physical tea subscription ($35-40/month) that bundles premium Chinese teas sourced directly by Vincent, live virtual tastings twice weekly, and access to community features within the app. Over 600 members across 50+ countries subscribe.

However, development has slowed significantly. The last major update shipped in January 2024, over two years ago. Feature requests like a shared tea database, web app, and offline mode remain unaddressed. The monthly subscription plan was discontinued in 2025 due to US tariff changes affecting international shipping. The app remains functional and well-regarded, but it is no longer actively evolving.

Tealytics launched in 2025 with a different philosophy: turn your tea data into insights, not just entries. Where MyTeaPal is a journal, Tealytics is a journal that also teaches you about your preferences, optimizes your brewing, and tracks your exploration across 160+ tea subtypes.

Why I Built Tealytics

Full honesty: I built Tealytics, and the MyTeaPal Club is part of the reason. I liked the app. What I did not like was that the deeper features and your own data export sit behind a physical tea subscription. I did not want to commit to a monthly box of tea I did not choose just to get better tracking and to own what I had logged. I also wanted it on the web, so I could log from a laptop during a desk gongfu session instead of reaching for my phone. So I built the tea journal I actually wanted: premium features you can pay for on their own, no tea subscription attached, and it runs in any browser.

Tip

The short version: pay for the premium features on their own if you want them, no tea subscription attached, in any browser.

Where Tealytics Wins

Web App Access

MyTeaPal is mobile-only. If you prefer logging teas from a laptop or desktop (common during gongfu sessions at a desk), you need a phone in hand. Tealytics works in any browser and on mobile, so you can use whichever device is convenient.

Structured Flavor Profiling

MyTeaPal offers 100+ predefined flavor tags, which is useful for quick labeling. Tealytics goes deeper with 12 structured flavor attributes (sweetness, bitterness, astringency, floral, earthy, body, and more) scored on a 0-10 scale with live radar chart previews. This structured data powers comparisons, analytics, and pattern detection that tags alone cannot support.

Analytics and Insights

MyTeaPal provides basic pie charts for your collection breakdown. Tealytics offers three analytics dashboards with brewing optimization scatter plots, consumption forecasting, drinking pattern analysis, and wellness correlation. Your data actually works for you instead of sitting in a log.

Inventory Forecasting

Both apps track inventory with auto-depletion. Tealytics adds consumption rate tracking, restock predictions, and low-stock alerts. It tells you not just what you have, but when you will run out.

Achievements and Exploration

Tealytics includes 80+ achievements across 7 categories and a Leaf Ledger that tracks your exploration across 160+ tea subtypes. MyTeaPal has streak tracking but nothing comparable for motivating discovery.

AI Label Scanning

Point your camera at a tea label and Tealytics extracts the details automatically. MyTeaPal requires manual entry for every tea, which is the single most common complaint in user reviews.

Community Tea Database

Tealytics has a growing community-contributed tea catalog. MyTeaPal has no shared database at all. Every tea must be entered from scratch, even popular ones that thousands of people drink.

Active Development

Tealytics ships updates weekly. MyTeaPal's last major update was January 2024. For an app you rely on daily, development momentum matters.

Where MyTeaPal Wins

Completely Free

MyTeaPal is genuinely free with no ads and no in-app purchases. The core app has no paywall. Tealytics also has a generous free tier (unlimited teas, sessions, and infusions), but advanced analytics and AI features require a $3.49/month subscription. If you want zero cost, MyTeaPal delivers.

Pleasant Brewing Timer

MyTeaPal's timer is widely praised for its audio design. It uses flowing water sounds and gentle bell tones instead of jarring alarms, plus a water-level visualization visible from across the room. It also offers both countdown and stopwatch modes for different brewing styles.

Teaware Tracking Detail

Both apps let you catalog teaware. MyTeaPal includes photos and descriptions per piece. Tealytics tracks capacity, material, and brew style tags in a gear library, and links gear directly to sessions so you can see how different vessels affect your results.

Tea Randomizer

Can't decide what to brew? MyTeaPal's randomizer picks a tea from your collection for you. A small feature, but one that users consistently mention enjoying.

Cross-Device Sync (iOS and Android)

MyTeaPal syncs across iOS and Android via cloud. If you use both platforms, your data follows you. Tealytics is currently web-based, with a native iOS app launching soon.

Established Community

The MyTeaPal Club has 600+ members across 50+ countries with live virtual tastings twice weekly. If you value a tight-knit community built around Chinese tea culture (and don't mind the subscription tea box), MyTeaPal's social ecosystem is more mature.

Android App

MyTeaPal has a native Android app. Tealytics is currently web-based with an iOS app launching soon.

Who Should Choose What

Choose Tealytics if you:

  • Want analytics and insights from your brewing data, not just a log
  • Value a web app for desktop tea sessions
  • Want a shared tea database instead of manual entry for every tea
  • Care about flavor profiling that enables comparison and pattern detection
  • Want inventory forecasting with restock alerts
  • Appreciate AI features like label scanning
  • Want an app that is actively developed and improving weekly

Choose MyTeaPal if you:

  • Want a completely free app with no premium tier to think about
  • Primarily use Android
  • Value teaware tracking with volume measurements
  • Want an established community with live virtual tastings
  • Prefer a simple, focused tea journal without analytics complexity
  • Are interested in the integrated tea subscription box
  • Like the timer's audio design and water-level visualization

Switching from MyTeaPal

MyTeaPal gates data export behind Club membership ($35+/month), which makes switching harder than it should be. If you are a Club member, export your data first, then import it into Tealytics.

If you are not a Club member, you will need to re-enter your teas manually. The good news: Tealytics' AI label scanning and community tea database make adding teas significantly faster than MyTeaPal's fully manual process. Many users find that rebuilding their collection in Tealytics takes less time than expected, especially since popular teas are often already in the community catalog.

Your future sessions in Tealytics will capture structured flavor data, brewing analytics, and exploration progress from day one, giving you more value from every cup you log.
