Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is the biggest tea state in southern India, and most of it is the Nilgiris, so the state is best read as the structure built around one growing district. What separates it from Assam or Darjeeling is ownership. The south is a smallholder industry: tens of thousands of growers with a few acres each, selling green leaf to factories, rather than a landscape of estates that each carry a name.
What grows here
Nilgiri black tea, overwhelmingly, from the Blue Mountains plateau, and that is where the reputation and the frost lots come from. The Anamallai hills around Valparai in Coimbatore district are the state's other real growing area and the home of the region's tea research institute, but their leaf is sold as south Indian rather than under a district name. Kerala's Munnar gardens, over the state border, sit in the same hill system and make a comparable tea.
What to look for
In the south the name on the packet is usually a factory or a region, not a garden. Most leaf is pooled from many small growers and processed at a bought-leaf factory, so there is no single plot behind the tea and no reason to expect one. That is not fraud, it is how the industry is built, but it does make the few estates that grow, process and sell their own leaf a different proposition. The state's tea also moves through the Coonoor and Coimbatore auctions, where 'Nilgiri' functions as a trading category rather than a promise about elevation.
How it got here
Tea reached these hills in the middle of the nineteenth century, after coffee, and it shared the Nilgiri slopes with cinchona, the quinine crop the colonial government planted there in the 1860s. UPASI, the planters' association that has carried the south's research and lobbying since 1893, is based at Coonoor with its tea research institute at Valparai, and the UPASI clones are what much of the region is planted with. The long story since is a squeeze on the growers at the bottom: they sell leaf into a price they do not set, so a weak auction is felt first by the people with three acres.
